The Senior Engineer HVAC serves as an internal Subject Matter Expert for the Amtrak Mechanical Department regarding heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems on passenger cars and locomotives.  This would include providing hands-on technical support for troubleshooting of defects and repeat bad actor equipment as well as technical knowledge, design, and specifications for improvements to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and their installation on passenger cars and locomotives.  The Senior Engineer will also be called upon to participate in essential regulatory and engineering conferences.  
This position would provide the support for development of maintenance procedures and engineering specifications, solve advanced technical problems, research & troubleshoot reliability issues, develop and prototype improvements to the existing HVAC and refrigeration systems, monitor & respond to regulatory changes in the HVAC environment, and communicate with resources both internally and externally to meet business objectives.


Provide hands-on technical support for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems on all of Amtrak’s passenger car and locomotive fleets
Work with Fleet Managers to provide design and procedure improvements related to equipment problems stemming from either design issues, retrofit and field modifications, obsolescence, or maintenance shortcomings.
Collect, organize, review and analyze performance data to verify performance of designs and monitor for new problems as they arise. 
Assist in developing and/or improving engineering work practices to increase equipment reliability and to modify and improve maintenance plans. 
Participate in field tests, safety inspections, and warranty programs for both Amtrak and state rolling stock equipment, and in other investigations as required.
Provide technical guidance to, assist, and mentor the more junior engineers regarding HVAC and refrigeration systems. 
Participate in engineering and regulatory advisory boards, such as the FRA RSAC, APTA PRESS and similar agencies.


BS degree in an engineering discipline, or a BS degree and engineering work experience.
Demonstrated experience in design, construction, maintenance, and/or troubleshooting of HVAC and/or refrigeration systems.
Extensive understanding of ASHRAE and EPA regulations, design specifications, and recommended practices.
Demonstrated experience working in a matrix organization.
Proficient and possess experience in technical writing, spreadsheet and database manipulation.
Demonstrated experience in quality control practices.  
Ability to work directly on electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic components onboard the rolling stock in a Maintenance Shop environment
Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documents for troubleshooting and design changes.
Ability to learn and follow regulations and safety procedures, including FRA Blue Flag rules and EPA regulations regarding refrigerants.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Basic computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft computer software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and Project.
Ability to develop and implement Mechanical procedures, Modifications, SMP’s and Maintenance Bulletins and Alerts.


Master’s Degree or equivalent.
Licensed Professional Engineer.
Understanding of both passenger and freight railroad operating environments.
Knowledgeable in areas of North American railway safety and regulatory practices including, but not limited to, AAR and FRA standards and rules.
Significant engineering experience with multiple different HVAC systems.
Significant engineering experience with a railroad or other technically similar agency.
Active participant in a railway or HVAC industry regulatory advisory board, such as the FRA RSAC or APTA PRESS or ASHRAE committees.


Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
