SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Within an assigned operating division, the District Manager Stations is responsible for managing and coordinating all passenger and station activities involved with train and station operations, at a minimum of two stations, ensuring an efficient customer focused and well organized operation in compliance with Amtrak policies and procedures. Support and provide efficient management and oversight of extra board staffing, payroll, and a variety of support services such as uniforms, radios, hotels, taxis, etc., that maximize the provision of passenger or station services and achieve financial and service delivery goals.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to the station employees regarding daily performance.
  • Manage employees for compliance with the rules and regulations for Amtrak policies and practices and initiate action for non-compliance in a consistent and fair manner.
  • Oversee station operations to ensure optimum safety, customer service on-time performance in compliance with all of Amtrak’s, local, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Manage the schedule of station employees to ensure service levels are met while assuring employees receive adequate training to successfully support the operations.
  • Handling of service disruptions and recovery efforts (dealing with angry customers, making re-accommodations for hotels, buses, special needs, unaccompanied minors) which requires ability to work calmly under high pressure conditions.
  • Ensure all station employees attend Amtrak-mandated training classes documenting and reporting training to ensure compliance.
  • Facilitate service disruptions or shortages of equipment requiring passengers to be re-accommodated to maximize passenger satisfaction and minimize passenger inconvenience, train delays and budget impact.
  • Interface with Marketing and Sales to facilitate group moves and relay promotional material and campaigns, and coordinate with state and local officials on a variety of station improvement projects.
  • Serve as a liaison with Mechanical, Marketing, Food & Beverage, Procurement, and other departments, as necessary and where appropriate to coordinate and resolve service issues, including train delays, equipment and mechanical issues and service disruptions to assure passenger accommodations and crew availability
  • Where applicable, oversee and direct facility maintenance, coordinating with Engineering Department ad facility management entities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and implement a departmental operating budget, provide information on variances, and develop cost effective station assignments to maximize production, minimize overtime and ensure goals are achieved.
  • Conduct station service remittance audits to protect revenue.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the department’s safety plans, with specific goals and objectives to reduce injuries.    
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with all federal, state and local agencies including all service providers.  
  • Extensive computer skills with knowledge of spreadsheets, data base, presentations and word processing software related to field.


WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of station operations, building maintenance, service delivery, passenger handling and labor agreements.
  • Significant experience leading and managing others with different levels of expertise, exhibiting innovative leadership and management skills.  
  • Ability to communicate both orally and written to work effectively with various agencies, departments and individuals throughout the organization with both internal and external customers.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations and applicable Amtrak labor agreements pertaining to station employees and operations.


PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Transportation or the equivalent combination of education training and or experience.
  • Experience on Amtrak’s business systems, such as AAROW and STARS.
  • Some experience managing multiple stations.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have knowledge of safety programs
  • Prior satisfactory work experience and proven leadership skills.
  • Must have strong organizational skills
  • Able to monitor employee performance
  • Able to create reports to illustrate job performance
  • Prior work experience in dealing with various unions
  • 40% travel required to BWI and New Carrollton Station
