SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position is responsible for coordination of the monitoring, reporting and auditing of Amtrak’s food safety, sanitation and public health compliance.  Will coordinate corrective actions relating to food handling and preparation, car watering, pest control, and equipment maintenance and cleaning within their respective regions.  This position is empowered to immediately halt food service car operations, remove cars from service and discontinue car watering until deficiencies are corrected.  This position will assist the public health group in providing technical expertise to meet public health and sanitation regulatory requirements.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Monitor, evaluate and report compliance with sanitation requirements for food handling and preparation on rolling stock, at catering facilities and at contracted vendor’s locations.

• Conduct potable water sampling and analysis pertaining to Amtrak’s O &M plan for EPA compliance with the National Safe Drinking Water Act.  Empowered to remove cars from service due to bacteriological water failures.  Provides legal tracking and closures to water sampling failures.

• Monitor, evaluate and report compliance with sanitation requirements for car watering servicing and waste handling servicing areas. 

• Coordinate compliance with public health policies and standards related to food handling and preparation, car watering, pest control, and equipment maintenance and cleaning.

• Test backflow prevention compliance at Amtrak watering points within the region.

• Assist in corporate and self-audits of major facility sanitation assessments within the designated region.

• Conduct full investigations of all suspected food- or water-borne illness complaints and provide detailed reports to Amtrak Claims and Law to prevent potential lawsuits.

• Prepares and distributes corporate public health newsletters.

• Implements sanitation training programs within the respective regions regarding sanitation and public health requirements.  Conducts formal public health/sanitation training presentations to various Amtrak departments such as Passenger     Experience, Mechanical, Catering, as well as internal and external customers

• Assist and coordinate the monitoring and performance of the corporate pest control vendor contract.

 

WORK EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum demonstrated experience in a Food Safety, Public Health, or Environmental field position.  
• Licensed professional, Registered Environmental Health Specialist, or Certified Food Safety Professional (or similar).

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel; experience working with Amtrak PC programs, including SAP, WMS and ARROW.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Certified Backflow Prevention Device tester (FDA, TREEO, or similar) or Cross-Connection training

 

PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE:

• Certified in Food-borne Illness Investigations (NEHA or similar)

• 10+ years experience in Food Safety, Public Health or Environmental field position.

• ServSafe Certified Food Manager

• HACCP Certified

• National or Registered Sanitarian (R.S.)

 

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

• Advanced degree in Environmental Health, Biological Science or closely related field

 

 

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
