SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the testing, inspection, installation, maintenance and repair of all signal equipment and may be required to perform digging, trenching and painting duties while working independently.    
  • Must successfully complete AMT-1 exam, standard Signal Maintainer's test and standard FRA test    
  • Observes safe work performance standards and operations in completion of daily  tasks and provides prompt reports in cases of accident, injury and illness.
  • Attends safety briefings when assigned by Foreman, observes safety compliance, maintains qualifications (GCOR) and coordinates with other departments.  
  • Monitors that all tools and material necessary for completion of work are properly provided.    
  • Participates in the planning and direction of  testing and maintenance of signal equipment: relays, batteries, switch machines, signal fixtures, cable, and drag equipment detectors.    
  • Works within the guidelines of the System Safety Program by being alert to physical hazards which affect operations, including the modification of recognition of or cessation of operations when conditions exist or could develop that would conflict with a safe operating environment for Amtrak or others.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conducts tests of switch machinery, batteries for plant grounds, relays and cable for specifications, track signals, circuits for route locking, crossing track, locking points and balanced air, air compressors and records findings in accordance with AMT 27.
  • Inspects test signal apparatus and systems and records the findings including the results from above in accordance with AMT 27.    
  • Maintains and repairs the above in accordance with AMT 23 and the special instructions governing the construction of Signals and Interlocking.    
  • Assists Signalman in performance of assigned duties and conducts his/her own equipment tests and records results.    
  • Works with the Foreman to maintain all small tools and equipment conducting daily inventories to ensure good working order .    
  • Responds to signal failures, answers trouble calls for signal failures and reports to the Foreman.     
  • Assist in marking out where cables are located; installation of new movementties; switch inspections; surfacing; and to provide generators for power outage.
  • Perform carpentry, plumbing and electrical tasks as needed including pipefitting and low voltage 220 voltage electrical work.
