SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
This position will serve as Amtrak's nationwide ergonomic subject matter expert and will assist the Director Industrial Hygiene, in developing, implementing, and maintaining Amtrak’s company-wide ergonomic and industrial hygiene programs.  This position will provide technical expertise and guidance to locations and field staff on the West Coast and in Western States for ergonomic, industrial hygiene, and safety matters relating to OSHA and FRA regulations.  The individual filling this position will conduct site inspections and workplace ergonomic and hazardous agent monitoring and coordinate contractor ergonomic, industrial hygiene, and building asbestos assessment field work and review work product. They will also provide expert testimony in support of Amtrak’s Law Department in matters regarding claims, legal actions, and administrative citations.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Provides ergonomic technical expertise to Amtrak sites throughout the United States
•Conducts on-site visits to identify and evaluate ergonomic, safety and health hazards and recommend engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment requirements to protect employees  
•Provides technical expertise to locations and field staff on the West Coast and in Western States for ergonomic, industrial hygiene, occupational health, safety, and regulatory issues. This includes updating data in industrial hygiene databases
•Assists Director Industrial Hygiene, in implementing and maintaining  programs, policies, and procedures
•Coordinates ergonomic and industrial hygiene contractor field activities, reviews work proposals, and reviews work product
•At the direction of the Medical Department, investigates workplace accident or illness claims
•Provides expert testimony in support of Amtrak’s Law Department with regard to FELA claims, legal actions, and OSHA or FRA citations. Conducts industrial hygiene records searches in response to Law Department requests
•Provides interpretations of OSHA or FRA regulations
•Participates in Chemical Task Force activities, reviews and approves new chemical products, and investigates alleged illnesses related to use of chemical products

 


WORK EXPERIENCE:
•Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE) Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) or eligible for certification or American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or eligible for certification.  Moderate level of demonstrated experience working in the ergonomic, industrial hygiene, occupational health and/or safety fields.  This experience should include a good understanding of OSHA and FRA safety & health regulations, workplace ergonomic, health, and safety hazard identification and control, illness investigation, program and policy implementation, and problem resolution
•Ability to work independently
•Good organization skills
•Good understanding of OSHA and FRA safety and health regulations and their application in the workplace
•Experience in identifying workplace ergonomic, health, and safety hazards, the procedures and techniques used to evaluate these hazards, and in identifying/developing engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment requirements to reduce or eliminate exposure
•Demonstrated skills using PC-based spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel, Access); Microsoft Word, PowerPoint

 

 

PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE:
•Experience in handling ergonomic issues in industrial, shop, or transportation settings
•Experience in working with asbestos removal or repair operations
•Experience as an expert witness and in giving depositions

 

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION:
•BCPE or ABIH Certification

 


COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
•Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
