SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The primary responsibility of the Amtrak System Track Engineering Design Group is to provide track alignment designs and special trackwork designs for interlocking renewals and curve modifications for both undercutter projects and tie-renewal projects.  We also review and comment on track engineering designs performed by engineering design consultants for Amtrak projects and projects that could impact Amtrak’s infrastructure.  The Design Group uses Bentley Microstation Rail Track® CAD software to analyze track alignment survey data, to develop proposed horizontal and vertical alignment designs and produce construction drawings.  The Co-op position will support the design activities of the group by assisting in various phases of design including field survey, production of existing conditions drawings, analyzing geometry data, developing proposed track alignments and profiles, and developing special trackwork drawings.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Learn and get up to speed quickly doing drafting with Bentley Microstation software. This is a position in the design group which produces engineering drawings. Therefore, the development and refinement of drafting skills is essential and will be your top priority.
• Learn and use Amtrak’s Track Design Specification (Specification No. 63).
• Create track engineering design drawings for track alignments, profiles, cross-sections, details and detail plans of special trackwork.
• Read and understand technical drawings and reports.
• Read, interpret and manipulate land surveying data in digital format.
• Become qualified in Amtrak Contractor RWP.
• Occasionally assist Amtrak land surveyors with field work.  Therefore, the person in this position must be in good physical condition and willing to work outdoors.

EDUCATION:
• Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis on rail transportation, construction management, geotechnical or storm water management.


QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. 
• Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum. 
• Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).

• Available to work a minimum of 30 hours per week between the days/hours: Monday-Friday, 8a-5p
• Excellent organizational skills

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Prior experience with AutoCAD, Microstation or other Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software.


COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
