Position Summary:

This is an internship in Amtrak’s Host Railroads Group. Amtrak’s Host Railroads Group acts as a liaison between the various “host” railroads that Amtrak trains operate over, and numerous other Amtrak departments, including Operating Divisions, Engineering, Long Distance and State-Supported Service Lines, Real Estate, Finance, Scheduling, Government Affairs, and Law. The Group’s primary responsibilities are (1) monitoring and reporting on host railroad performance, (2) coordinating the joint operating and investment activities with Amtrak and host railroads, and (3) negotiating and administering the operating and business agreements between Amtrak and these host railroads. 


The intern will execute several projects related to operations analysis and contract administration, including a mix of quantitative analysis, auditing/archiving of Amtrak systems and records relative to agreements in place with host railroads, and interpretation of contract language.  The intern will also support development of negotiating positions for current or future Amtrak negotiations with host railroads.


Essential Functions:

• Ability to research, collect, and analyze data.
• Make recommendations based on analysis of Amtrak delay, on-time performance, revenue, cost, and other data.
• Update and perform maintenance on two multi-user contracts databases.
• Compile, distribute and file agreement documents, including electronic records.
• Assist in the design of performance measurement reports.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with management.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate or Master’s degree in economics, business, or quantitative discipline.  
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week between the days/hours of Monday – Friday, 8am –   5pm.



• At least two years of academic experience or graduate status. 

• Ability to work 20 hours per week. 

• Excellent PC skills.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Strong quantitative research and analysis skills.
• Strong business sense.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities within tight deadlines.
• Strong communication skills (oral and written).
• Familiarity with the transportation industry and specific interest or desire to work in transportation.


Work Environment:
• Office environment
• Employee will be based in Philadelphia, PA.  Position will require periodic non-overnight travel (by train) between Amtrak’s offices in Washington, DC.
