Summary of Duties

Have a passion for making things happening in a fast-paced engineering environment? As an Intern at Amtrak, you will learn the foundation of what role the engineering department makes on efficiently moving train traffic. You will work under close supervision of an Engineering manager and in collaboration with all levels of stakeholders: from department leaders, to project/program managers, function supervisors, and field level personnel. Individuals in this role use planning strategy and problem-solving skills to support assigned projects, including:

  • Major Programs (Switch, Crossing, Tie, Rail, Undercutter, TLM)
  • Day to day maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation of train movement
  • Lead field level forces on all front – safety, quality, production
  • Major Maintenance and Construction Programs
  • Balance office work with practical hands-on railroad field work.


Essential Functions:

  • Works with technical experts within specific disciplines to ensure all work is completed by Amtrak and industry standards as outlined in M/W 1000.
  • Coordinates with all departments and operations to ensure the work performed has minimal impact to railroad operations.
  • Monitor and track all work performed in accordance with established procedures and within project scope.
  • Proactively resolve issues, monitor resources, track usage, equipment utilization, and material procurement and distribution.
  • Work with those responsible for the compliance with FRA standards for construction and maintenance of track.
  • Assist leadership in track construction phase from the beginning to end of track department new construction.
  • Assist leadership team with scheduling all work activity for major track outages and coordinating with C&S, B&B and the Transportation Department to accomplish work schedules.
  • Learn and understand basics of all applicable labor agreement


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering.
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week between the days/hours of Monday – Friday, 8am –   5pm.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Agriculture
  • Hands on approach with basic knowledge in Track construction and maintenance.
  • Supervisory or Leadership Experience
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Project Management and Planning/Scheduling
  • Interest in a combination of field (75%) and office (25%) environment. Position is subject to respond to emergencies in all weather conditions 24/7
