The Solution Development Engineering Intern will provide technical support to Amtrak’s Track Geometry Group in developing data driven technologies. This role will work closely with the researchers and engineers to understand the principles of automated data processing, data management, and enterprise solutions. This role will directly take part in implementation, programming, and testing of tools that are critical to solving key problems related to data and mapping them to gaps in Amtrak’s process to drive predictive and prescriptive analytics.
The role will have experience in MATLAB and JAVA programming, signal processing, graphical user interface (GUI) design and development, and database design. The resource will collaborate in the ongoing development projects to deliver software products.

• MATLAB programming, and signal processing are mandatory
• Knowledge of database technologies, and SQL skills for querying and manipulating datasets
• Experience in both front-end and back-end software development in MATLAB and JAVA
• Design and implementation of data integration across the entire analytics infrastructure
• Documentation and structured programming to support sustainable development practice
• Excellent debugging and code-reading skills 

•    This position begins Summer/May 2019

Graduate student in a master’s or PhD program in all fields of engineering and science 



•    Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. 
•    Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum. 
•    Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

•    Available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week between the days/hours: Monday-Friday, 8a-5p

• Provable experience with MATLAB, especially signal processing and database toolboxes
• Experience with data analytics using statistical methodologies and tools (R, Python, SAS, SPSS, etc.) is a strong plus
• Experience in implementing large scale software solutions is a strong plus
• Some experience working with structured and unstructured data sources using Big Data platforms such as Talend, Informatica, Hadoop Enterprise
• Experience with visualization tools such as Rail Doctor, Tableau or similar
• Understanding of data warehousing concepts including data integration for data warehouse objects
• Demonstrated skill in project planning and collaborating with groups
• Ability to describe challenges and solutions in both technical and business terms
• Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships at all organizational levels

•Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution (preferably Sophomore – Junior level)


Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
