SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Sr. Engineer Track Zero Defects is responsible for providing technical support to System Production and Division Maintenance of Way teams during project planning, construction and post construction activities for special trackwork installation in Penn Station New York.  The purpose of the Zero Defects program is to get special trackwork Penn Station to a state of good repair.  Specific responsibilities include: jobsite and work plan evaluation, inspection and inventory of incoming material, QA/QC of production methodologies, post installation monitoring of special or new items pertaining to trackwork or track structure, assist with implementation and troubleshooting of experimental materials and new technologies, and audit production reporting in Maximo System.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Pre-installation inspection of special trackwork, routine audit and acceptance of manufacturer’s inspection records.
  • Revise existing and develop new Track Material Standards and Engineering Practices as necessary.
  • Establish item descriptions for SAP based item catalog.
  • Develop quality standards for construction.
  • Develop/review drawings for new Standard Plans.
  • Create Inventory of Special Trackwork material both in and out of track.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have at least 5 years of field experience on railroad projects.
  • Strong background is reading, interpreting and using Amtrak Standard Track Plans.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point)
  • Qualified on Amtrak safety rules, AMT-2, NORAC.
  • Possess a motorized vehicle operator license.
  • Must be able to organize tasks/thoughts in a logical matter and produce detailed, timely reports. 
  • Must be able to read construction and manufacturing drawings. 
  • Ability to lift 20-pound objects.
  • Familiar with CAD program such as MicroStation or AutoCAD 
  • Strong knowledge of construction procedures and project management. 
  • Familiar with SAP, material control and purchasing functions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior satisfactory job performance.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Civil or Industrial Engineering or equivalent relevant experience. 
  • Demonstrated experience using computer based asset management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience developing quality assurance standards and programs.
  • Demonstrated experience producing reports and evaluating manufacturing practices.
  • Demonstrated experience performing facility inspections.
  • Experience working with team members from multiple disciplines including other engineering departments, surveyors and Amtrak Transportation Department.
  • Candidate must be in good physical condition and pass a pre-employment physical exam


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registration as Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training 
  • Experienced administration of several contracts involving inspection services at multiple locations.
  • Experience with railroad operations, procedures and special equipment. 
  • Certificate in ISO 9000 quality assurance / inspection procedures. 
  • Extensive experience developing specifications for third party inspection contracts.


COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
