SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Database Manager is responsible for the implementation and support of highly complex databases.  Administers and controls the activities related to data planning, database design, and implementation for an assigned department or enterprise-wide database. Establishes policies and procedures for effective coordination of database activities. Individuals in this role are knowledgeable in most aspects for designing and constructing data archiectures, operational data stores and data marts.

 

The position facilitate consistent business analysis, data acquisition, and access analysis and design, Database Managemenet Systems optimization, archiving and recovery strategy, load strategy design and implementation, security and change management. The individuals may translate strategic requirements into a usable enterprise information architecture, which may include an enterprise data model, associated metamodel, common business vocabulary, ontologies, and taxonomies to be used to guide enterprise solution development and achieve consistency of information assests across the application portfolio.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the overall design of the enterprise wide data/information archiecture, which maps to the enterprise archiecture and balances the need for access against security and performance requirements. Focuses on enterprise wide data and database design, consulsts in the project planning process with clients, IT business analysts, archectects and team members.
  • Design, implement, evaluate and maintain moderately complex  technical database architecture.  
  • Implement database upgrades, backups, and restores. 
  • Review database design and stored procedures, and recommends opportunities for enhancement.
  • Create processes for database changes and security of the data. 
  • Verify data integrity
  • New technologies, define Amtrak Enterprise database standards
  • Perform proactive space/growth management
  • Perform research and analysis on upcoming releases of databases by database vendors.
  • Prepare documentation on the development and functioning of operational systems to be reviewed by senior developers.
  • High Availability, Disaster Recovery, Continious Operations and scalability improvement 
  • Evaluate, establish, and implement policies and procedures relating to database management, security, maintenance, and utilization. 
  • Provide training to user personnel in the use of database.
  • Provide technical support and guidance in the investigation, analysis, and resolution of database issues.
  • Support Microsoft SQL Server databases including Integration Services, Reporting Services and Analysis Services.
  • Tuning of TSQL queries for performance enhancement.
  • Backup, recover, migrate and upgrade of MS SQL Server databases.


WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 to 7 years related work experience
  • Experience managing SQL Server 2016, 2012, 2008, R2 and 2005
  • Experience managing SSIS, SSRS and SSAS
  • Experience managing and troubleshooting Microsoft Failover clusters
  • Experience managing and troubleshooting Microsoft Always On availability groups

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • May travel less than 10% of the time
  • Requires on-call status and may require weekend or after-business hours work.


The successful candidate will have proven experience with:
•    Administer security and logins for SQL Server
•    Install, configure and administrate SQL Server DB and BI suite
•    Execute backup and recovery of SQL Server databases
•    Implement SQL Server table partitions to improve database query performance
•    Implement indexing performance improvements utilizing the Index tuning tool
•    MS SQL Log Shipping Replication and Mirroring
•    Automation of database jobs via the SQL Server Agent

 

Demonstrated knowledge of experience in service areas.  

* Serve as escalation from Tier 2
* Advise and consult on archiecture and engineering issues and approaches
* Perform advanced database and query tuning
* Backup and recovery improvements/strategy
* Clustering and replication improvements/strategy
* Audit definition, Patch evaluation/testing, Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
* Capacity/Demand/Incident/Problem/Release Management
* New technologies, define Amtrak Enterprise database standards

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION:
Master's degree in engineering or computer science, or equivalent.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Systems Engineering, Project management experience, ITIL V3 foundation Certified.

Has a broad level of understanding surrounding information archiecture standards.

Requries expert level of advanced database  programming techniques, applications and systems design. Requires knowledge of distributed systems archiecture, middleware and design.

Excellent written, presentation and verbal communications skills
