SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Principal Apps Sys Engineer is primarily responsible for developing new and supporting existing SAP Programs and integrations within SAP Eco-systems and non-SAP systems. The Principal Apps Sys Engineer will also have a strong ability to understand Amtrak’s production business processes and create solutions using SAP technologies addressing the current and future needs of the organization Engineer will write, enhance and debug integration solutions using SAP ABAP, PI 7.3.1 using different Adapters (HTTP/SOAP/REST/JMS/File/IDoc/ABAP Proxy/B2B/SQL/SSIS). 

Engineer will work on multiple projects as a project team member or leader and is responsible for Development, Integration analysis, design development, enhancement, maintenance and support.  The SAP Developer will work closely with clients, business analysts and team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality integration solutions, and will be involved in the full system’s life cycle.  

Responsibilities beyond development may include participation in component and data architecture design, technology planning, product evaluation, advanced testing processes and buy vs. build recommendations.      


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Define, develop and/or modify software application modules using disciplined development processes.
  • Work on projects that require increased skills in multiple technical environments and possess or develop knowledge of a specific business area. 
  • Participate in the project planning process with IT business analysts. 
  • Organize and documents technical requirements.  
  • Create technical design specifications.
  • Assist in evaluating and providing recommendations for application packages and tools.
  • Assist in the deployment and test of new modules, upgrades and fixes.  
  • Integrate solutions with other SAP and non-SAP applications. 
  • Participate in unit and integration testing activities.
  • Document functions and changes to new or modified modules and test activities/results.
  • Adhere to quality standards and procedures.  
  • Review modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application standards and SLAs.
  • Make modules production-ready by following release procedures and completing version control documents.
  • Provide ongoing maintenance of programs and interfaces. 
  • Provides Tier III support.  Troubleshoots existing information on systems to identify errors or deficiencies and develops solutions.
  • Assist in the development of user guides and training documentation.  
  • Provides technical coaching and mentoring to less-experienced team members.
  • Development activities and Level-3 technical support, including application architecture, employing one or a range of SAP development tools and including Root Cause Analysis
  • The IT Principal Application System Engineer will become the subject matter expert (SME) in the Order to Cash organization. He/She will develop technical roadmaps for Amtrak’s  Finance application ecosystem that provide resilience, reliability and scalability and are integrated with Amtrak IT infrastructure.  
  • He / She is expected to possess discriminating knowledge and know-how in a multitude of technical disciplines and capable of grasping new and evolving technologies when introduced. They will provide recommendations for best practices in the operations and maintenance (O&M) of the network of integration points 
  • In addition, he / she is expected to possess the “soft skills” required to effectively communicate technical changes to both technical and non-technical end-user audiences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum seven years of experience in Information Technology, including at least five in a developer role with the SAP product being required, from the list below:

  • Has been involved in at least two full cycle SAP implementations of the SAP product being supported
  • Knowledge of change and release management processes
  • Ability to estimate reliably the time, effort, dependencies, and resources required to complete a development task
  • Experience working in client-focused service delivery environments
  • Skilled in BW 7.5 on HANA, SQL, SSIS, DarCE, BPC modeling, and SAP ABAP and PI development tools and methodologies.
  • Excellent writing skills required to write and maintain documentation, such as technical specifications for SAP ABAP, PI, HANA objects. 
  • Ability to draw meaningful conclusions from relatively complex trends in data; proactively seeks new information sources to address gaps in data and information.
  • Ability to capture and realize requirements based on complex process.
  • Experienced in finding and correcting bugs in existing integration systems.
  • Ability to provide off-hours production support for the Order to Cash applications (SAP Business Suite system, SAP BPC).
  • Ability to work with Business Analysts, end users and other IT staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Ability to provide off-hours production support for the SAP Business Suite system and SAP BPC.  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology 
  • Experience with On-Premises and Cloud Application Management and Support 
  • Extensive technical experience implementing enterprise-grade Financial systems, applications and infrastructure
  • Familiarity with SAP systems, applications and infrastructure    
  • The successful candidate will have proven experience with: 
    • Oracle E-Business Suite Development and Execution
    • SAP/BPC 10.1
    • BW 7.5 on HANA
    • SQL Query Development and Execution 
    • SQL System Logging, Auditing and Reporting 
    • Extract, Transform and Load Technologies
    • Strong experience with and general knowledge of other disciplines within IT inclusive of IT Strategy, IT Operations, Enterprise Architecture 
    • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships both within the business and with external / internal customers 
    • Experience driving change in large nation-wide organizations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Programming/Systems or Computer Science, specialized training, certification, or equivalent work experience.
  • SAP technical certification in the product being supported
  • Certification in at least one formal development methodology
  • Knowledge of Amtrak SAP Landscape and RICEFW Inventory     
  • Prior experience working with financial reporting, financial systems, financial processes and audit processes.
  • Strong ability to communicate technical concepts, terms and language to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Excellent trouble shooting experience
  • Experience with SAP
  • SAP Certifications
