SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The purpose of this position is to attract new engineers and to promote careers in rolling stock engineering by providing an entry point for engineers in training. The accepted candidate for the position will have the opportunity to apply their engineering skills in both the office and field, and to gain firsthand work experience in the various aspects of rolling stock engineering on Amtrak’s passenger car fleet.

This Co-op is intended to begin Summer 2020 and run for a duration of approximately 6 months.

If an Electrical Engineer is selected:
The candidate will be expected to assess and design improvements to the electrical control system on the passenger car HVAC system.  A successful re-design will be judged by its reduction in costs or maintenance, improved reliability, and/or improved accuracy.  The analysis and re-design will involve assessment of the current performance and failure modes along with benchmarking of existing HVAC control technology in the rail industry.  It will be followed up with vendor selection, prototyping, testing, and field instruction documentation.  Union employee input will be collected during redesign as well, sometimes requiring day travel to rail yards in Bear, DE.  Successful completion of this task will be summarized in a presentation to senior leadership detailing the savings and improvements.

In addition to the above project, the candidate will also work one on one with a Senior Electrical Engineer to assist with support for Wilmington and Bear, DE overhaul facilities.  This work will entail non-routine troubleshooting and failure analysis, inspections, documentation review and writing, and smaller component re-design.  Candidate will be expected to communicate with shop management and leadership as well as shop technicians and electricians.

If a Mechanical Engineer is selected:
The candidate will be expected to assess and re-design the current Amfleet truck overhaul methods.  A successful re-design will be judged by its reduction in costs and improved accuracy, while still maintaining or improving the work process.  The analysis and re-design will involve assessment of the current method and benchmarking of existing semi-automated machining processes.

In addition to the above project, the candidate will also work one on one with a Senior Mechanical Engineer to assist with support for Wilmington and Bear, DE overhaul facilities.  This work will entail non-routine troubleshooting and failure analysis, inspections, documentation review and writing, and smaller component re-design.  Candidate will be expected to communicate with shop management and leadership as well as shop technicians and repairmen.
