This internship provides the opportunity to work as part of a team to help identify, develop and implement various business process improvements for the Engineering Department by examining benchmarking results, reviewing work practices, policies, procedures, data, budgets, agreements, work standards, and other relevant documentation in support of each of the technical disciplines.


• Provide personal leadership in safety, reliability and efficiency.  
• Assist in the development of knowledge based methods of improvement in the execution of infrastructure maintenance and capital replacement.
• Support the planning process for the construction, maintenance, and repair of railroad infrastructure, including: Track, Structures, Communications and Signaling, Electric Traction systems, and other related facilities.
• Support projects to improve infrastructure reliability and determine best use of personnel and material for a safe and cost-efficient operation at maximum production.
• Assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of internal processes and controls and recommend enhancements to data retrieval, documentation, and process flow.
• Assist in the development of business cases to ensure that major financial investments and business process changes are supported with sound financial analysis to improve maintenance procedures and extend asset life.
• Provide analytical support for process improvement projects to include: time studies, process documentation, process implementation, and statistical data analysis.
• Assist in the development and adoption of (near) real-time reporting from Maximo and other related systems to enable data driven decision making by Engineering supervision and management.
•    This position begins Summer/May 2019


• Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering 


• Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. 
• Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum. 
• Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

• Available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week between the days/hours: Monday-Friday, 8a-5p

• Must have proven leadership experience.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills, self-starter, motivated individual.
• Willingness to hold both office and field positions to obtain technical and operational experience.
• Willingness to travel and or relocate to any location across the Amtrak Corporation.
• Demonstrated interest or competency in the railroad industry.
• Previous industry experience (internships, co-op, professional).
• Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
