This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.

 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position is to assist with the design of Amtrak-owned traction power substations and associated facilities on the Northeast Corridor, including transformers, circuit breakers and relay protection schemes. The position manages technical design activities for capital projects upgrading substations, signal power equipment and associated traction power assets. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in the execution of capital upgrade programs relating to the traction power substations, including transformers, circuit breakers, signal power generators and relay protection schemes
  • Perform detailed engineering design reviews on all assigned projects
  • Ensure internal and 3rd party traction power designs comply with Amtrak standards and Engineering Practices as well as any applicable industry standards.
  • Ensure constructability of all reviewed designs.
  • Integrate technical system improvements as part of the design progression process.
  • Report on assigned projects including progress, budgeting, forecasting, and scheduling
  • Perform field visits to various substation locations on the NEC in support of capital projects and operations/maintenance/troubleshooting activities.
  • Work with electric traction operations, maintenance, design staff and other departments to ensure a safe and reliable power network 
  • Provide data and assist with root cause analysis on electric traction system outages and failures
  • Respond to emergency calls involving the traction power substations


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with design and/or operation of railroad electric traction systems, frequency converters, protection relays, high voltage circuit breakers and transformers
  • Experience performing or reviewing load flow studies (preferred)
  • Experience with word processing, trending, spreadsheets, databases, CAD and PDF editing (Bluebeam, Adobe Acrobat). 
  • Ability to perform or direct troubleshooting of substation electrical equipment and associated protection and control systems.
  • Must have excellent technical writing ability


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • PE License in either New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland or New York

 

WORK ENVRIORNMENT:

  • Combination of office and field work. Must be able to work in the field under all weather conditions.
  • Travel: (25%)

The salary/hourly range is $86,500 - $111,996 for the Electrical Engineer position and $103,700 - $134,460 for the Sr Electrical Engineer position. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
