SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position will support Engineering Structures Team by performing tasks as directed by department design professionals. General tasks include beam, foundation, bridge tie or bearing calculations, design drawing detailing in CAD at the instruction of the Project Engineer and/or review of 3rd party designs to protect Amtrak assets, traffic and Right-of-Way.  Work is likely to include site visits to active maintenance projects, fixed/movable bridges or other recent asset / adjacent construction to observe and assist in construction oversight, design verification or inspection duties.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Search for, and file, drawings and documents in department document library.
  • Perform minor design and drafting.
  • Edit, revise and publish written construction project specifications manual.
  • Revise and publish scopes of work.
  • Manage department master specifications library.
  • Assist in document reproduction.
  • Perform calculations for review and approval by professional.
  • Assist with correspondence.
  • Review and mark-up engineering drawings and collate associated comments

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. 
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering (Structures or Construction Management Emphasis)
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong PC skills, especially Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability and willingness to go on short (single work day) trips to observe field conditions, perform site material reviews, assist in inspections and documentation, etc.
  • Ability to build relationships and to communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, managers and clerical staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, self-starter, motivated individual
  • AutoCAD design and drafting experience
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks
  • Desire to pursue building design career
  • Interest in railroad transportation industry
  • At least 3 years of academic undergraduate studies completed or a senior status
  • Available to work generally full-time 40 hrs/week during the summer time frame

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
