In monitoring the independent public accountants (IPA) audits, Amtrak OIG holds itself to the standards of independence, professional objectivity, and technical excellence. Amtrak OIG’s monitoring approach is to understand the company’s business, the risks it faces and its internal controls, and assess the risk of material misstatement of the financial statements in order to ensure the IPA conducts an effective audit. The Audit Intern will be an integral member of a team of professionals responsible for conducting research, analyzing accounting and auditing standards, attending site visits, and conducting other monitoring procedures.


•    Assist with monitoring the independent public accountants (IPA) audits 
•    Review procedures performed in conjunction with monitoring the Consolidated Financial Statement (CFS) Audit conducted in accordance with Government Auditing Standards and the Single Audit performed in accordance with the Uniform Guidance
•    Develop an understanding of Amtrak OIG’s IPA monitoring approach, methodology, and tools 
•    Establish working relationships with the IPA and Amtrak (the company) personnel 
•    Perform analytical reviews of audit documents 
•    Review the IPA’s accounting and operating procedures and systems of internal control 
•    Identify accounting and auditing issues and perform research to propose possible solutions 
•    Prepare documentation supporting Amtrak OIG conclusions 
•    Apply concepts of risk assessment 
•    Attend meetings and prepare minutes
•    Prepare and analyze spreadsheets
•    Help to develop findings and conclusions


•    Current full or part-time Senior Undergraduate or Graduate student from a nationally recognized accredited degree program in Accounting or other relateed degree with an emphasis or minor in Accounting (minimum 24 hours of accounting course work)
•    Applicants must have a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B” or better) as recorded on their official transcript

•    Legally eligible to work in the US
•    Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
•    Clear and concise oral and written communications skills
•    Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment with minimal supervision
•    Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
•    Ability to multi-task with attention to detail

•    Experience with Adobe Professional
