POSITION SUMMARY: 

Amtrak is seeking an intern to support the Director, Demand Forecasting, in reviewing, analyzing, and synthesizing demand data and models used to forecast Amtrak ridership and ticket revenue. This position will require the candidate to apply theoretical concepts to robust data sources and create meaningful insight that can be shared with senior leadership. Specifically, the candidate would provide analysis into the impact of various attributes like price, travel time, and service frequency/times. The internship is designed to provide an environment where the intern can both acquire new knowledge and hone his or her skills in a practical manner via a professional, office setting.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The intern will assist the department with a wide range of projects requiring tactical and strategic analytics, including ridership/revenue analysis, ridership/revenue forecasting, business case support, budget planning and development, data visualization, and market analysis. The intern may also assist in developing and preparing presentation materials, data reviews and complete other analysis-related projects as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, business (finance, accounting) or economics.
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong analytical skills required. Interest in travel or transportation industry preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Programming skills/experience with Python/R, SQL, VB, and/or other computer coding.
  • Some experience with the use of ArcView (and/or other GIS software).
  • Must possess excellent customer service, strong communication and interpersonal skills, work well with others in an integrated team environment, and must be self-motivated.

 

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills

 

The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc.  In addition paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
